Volunteering Opportunities

Here is a list of upcoming events you can expect from TheatreWorks / 72-13 in the coming months. If you’re interested, do save the dates now!

She Ain’t Heavy, She’s Reaching into Space

That day, like many times before, Faye and Kai began by dancing together, communicating wordlessly through their bodies. Then, one of them stopped the dance and opened her mouth to talk about how she felt. KABOOM! The studio disappeared and they found themselves in an enchanted forest, entangled in wordy negotiations about how to dance and perform together. While they traipsed in the forest, they chanced upon the joys of singing out of tune, tasting a magic durian and befriending a teddy bear. They couldn’t wait to take these new inspirations back to the studio where they would dance and talk some more.

She Ain’t Heavy, She’s Reaching Into Space is performed as a tribute to their journey of becoming premier dancer-discussers. Will you join in to observe, wait, think and question as they perform discussion and discuss performance?

The 24-Hour Playwriting Competition

We are excited to announce that the much awaited 24-Hour Playwriting Competition is back again!

Art, history and heritage come together to form an inspiring backdrop for this year’s competition.

Held at Gillman Barracks, this year’s venue is a cluster of pre-war colonial buildings that were built in 1936. Once housing the British army, it became the site of a fierce battle as one of the last British posts to fall to the Japanese in 1942 – before being sold, in 1971, to the Singapore Armed Forces as a training ground for a grand total of $1.

Today, the ground’s military barracks have been transformed into a swanky arts centre, comprising an enclave of cool contemporary art galleries. Come along for a tour of the space and find out facts as well as real-life stories of this historical venue. Immerse yourself and let your writing be inspired by the unique blend of art, history and heritage of Gillman Barracks.

Dates: 30-31 July 2016, 4pm-4pm (in shifts)

Volunteer Time slots: To-Be-Confirmed

Venue: Gillman Barracks, , Blk 7 Lock Road Singapore 108935

Volunteer Role: Event assistants (To assist in crowd control, collation of feedback, tend to participants’ needs)

Conceptual choreographer Jérôme Bel’s latest work, Gala, will feature 20 or so amateurs (with a few professionals among them) from Singapore and will show them stumbling through ballet steps, a waltz or a moonwalk. Men, women and children ranging in body types and ability (and disability) will perform self-choreographed solos, which the others attempt to replicate behind them.

Bel applies a democratic theory to dance ie. to undercut the traditional difference between professionals and amateurs. Gala in TheatreWorks is the Asian premiere.

Dates: 6-8 October 2016

Time Slot: 6.30pm – 10pm

Venue: 72-13 Mohamed Sultan Road, Singapore 239007

Volunteer Role: Front-of-House duties (To assist in crowd control, ticketing, collation of feedback forms)
